I Flew to China and Visited Factories. Here’s What Actually Happened.

Everyone told me to visit China. You can’t really trust suppliers until you’ve met them face to face. Said every experienced importer ever.

So I did it. Flew from the US to Guangzhou, spent two weeks visiting rooftop tent manufacturers. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Was it complicated? Also yes.

Let me walk you through what actually happens when you visit China to source rooftop tents.

Before You Book That Flight: Essential Prep

Visa stuff first

Don’t assume you can just show up. Check requirements with the Chinese embassy in your country. Visa processes can take weeks.

VPN. Non-negotiable.

Google, Gmail, Facebook, WhatsApp – blocked in China. Download a reliable VPN before you land. I use Astrill. Others swear by different services. Just have one ready.

Translation app

Most factory reps speak some English, but technical discussions? You’ll need help. iFLY Voice Input has saved me more than once. Budget buyers: hire a local interpreter for important meetings.

Trade Shows: Your Best Starting Point

If you’re visiting China for sourcing, trade shows are the highest-leverage use of your time. Here’s why:

  • Multiple suppliers in one location – compare side by side
  • Suppliers are actively looking for buyers – they’re in selling mode
  • Easier to negotiate when you have options

Canton Fair: The Big One

Guangzhou, twice a year (April and October). Largest trade show in China. Phases cover different product categories – outdoor products including rooftop tents are typically in Phase 3.

  • Phase 1 (Apr 15-19 / Oct 15-19): Automotive, Electronics
  • Phase 2 (Apr 23-27 / Oct 23-27): Home, Gifts
  • Phase 3 (May 1-5 / Oct 31-Nov 4): Textiles, Outdoor, Health

Cost tip: Book hotels early. Prices spike during Canton Fair season. I learned that the hard way.

Auto Parts Shows Worth Considering

Automechanika Shanghai (November) – Massive. Focuses on automotive accessories, but rooftop tent and overlanding suppliers show up in force.

Yiwu Auto Parts Fair (March) – Smaller than Automechanika, but specialized. Good for camping and outdoor gear specifically.

At the Show: What Actually Works

First time at a Chinese trade show? Here’s how to make it productive:

Day 1: Scout, don’t buy

Walk the entire show. Take photos, collect business cards, grab catalogs. Don’t commit to anything on day one. First-day excitement makes you overpromise.

Day 2-3: Serious conversations

Return to the booths that interested you. Ask detailed questions. Request samples if the product looks promising.

Last day: Negotiate and buy samples

Suppliers are tired, inventory is heavy, and they’re motivated to move show samples. Last-day pricing can be 20-30% better than opening day quotes.

Factory Visits: Worth the Extra Days

Trade shows give you a first impression. Factory visits give you the real picture.

What you learn on-site that you can’t learn remotely:

  • Actual production scale – how many workers, how many lines
  • Quality control processes – do they have them?
  • Raw material storage – organized or chaos?
  • Management competence – can they actually run a production run?

What I Wish I’d Known Sooner

1. Bring detailed specifications. Vague requests get vague results.

2. Sample quality does not equal production quality. Ask about their QC process specifically.

3. Small suppliers can be better partners. Not every factory needs to be massive. Sometimes smaller equals more attention to your order.

4. Follow up after the visit. Send a thank-you email, reference specific conversations. Suppliers remember people who actually engage.

Can’t Visit China? Consider These Shows Instead

Several major Chinese rooftop tent factories exhibit internationally:

  • AAPEX (Las Vegas, November) – Huge auto aftermarket show. Chinese suppliers are there.
  • SEMA Show (Las Vegas, November) – More specialty/custom. Overlanding-focused suppliers present.

Yes, you’ll pay more to source at US shows. But if you can’t make the China trip, it’s still better than only working from Alibaba.
